Fauré Requiem, Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music and Mass in G minor
Nicky Losseff piano, Ben Horden organ
In 1908, Ralph Vaughan Williams studied in Paris with Maurice Ravel who in turn had been a pupil of Gabriel Fauré. A French sensitivity to luminous expression shapes Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G minor, an a cappella setting for double choir blending Tudor polyphony with sweeping modal harmonies. His romantic Serenade to Music (arranged by the composer for piano and chorus) sets Shakespeare’s poetry celebrating the celestial power of song. Finally, Fauré’s iconic Requiem, performed with an intimate organ accompaniment, offers comfort and reflection in a serene work that the composer memorably described as a ‘lullaby of death’.
