From deep roots in their hometown’s vibrant social music, song and dance scene, to major stage concert and ceilidh appearances in the UK and abroad, Sheffield-based Melrose Quartet have attracted a reputation for making music that truly connects with people. All four are internationally renowned singers, instrumentalists, writers and teachers, and together they perform a diverse repertoire including carousing chorus songs, lively dance tunes, ancient stories and modern compositions.
As part of the Music, Heritage, Place, project, the Quartet have been uncovering some of the hidden musical gems held in local archives across the country via live performances and workshops as well as in their award-winning BBC 3 series The Song Detectorists presented by Matthew Bannister – still available on BBC sounds. Hear these and other old and new musical treasures in their concert set, preceded by special performances from our local guests Folkestra and Cuppa and A Chorus.
The NCEM is proud to work with musicians young and old in our local community. Students from York Folkestra and singers from the NCEM Cuppa & a Chorus community singing group will be working with Melrose Quartet earlier in the day and will share their work with us on stage 6.30pm – 7pm.
“…an inspired ensemble so obviously playing for joy!” Martin Simpson
