Tim Lowe cello and Katya Apekisheva piano

Two of the finest recitalists in the country, Tim Lowe and Katya Apekisheva, open the 2025 festival with music that explores the qualities of the cello and how its voice combines with the piano. Schumann as always writes music that is full of fantasy, by turn poetic and exultant. It’s all here in his Fantasiestücke. Glasunov in his Elégie and Chant du Ménestrel takes advantage of the singing qualities of the cello; pieces that were favourites of the legendary cellist Pablo Casals. Despite being the work of an older man ‘Brahma F’ is music with all the passion and sweep of youth. He doesn’t hold back! It is one of the most startling and joyful pieces in the cello repertoire and is quite rightly held as a highpoint in late nineteenth-century chamber music.

Please note there is a £1.50 administration fee per transaction
