KATHRYN TICKELL & MICK MCAULEY
Tunes and songs from Northumberland and Ireland
Friday 9 April, 7.30pm – c.9.30pm
£24 (£22 concessions | £8 under 35s)
Kathryn Tickell: Northumbrian pipes, fiddle
Mick McAuley: melodeon, guitar, whistles, voice
Kathryn Tickell (Northumberland) and Mick McAuley (Ireland) are tradition-bearers who learnt their music from family and friends within their communities, who gave freely of their time, talent, and musical knowledge to ensure the passing down of centuries of tunes, songs and stories. Both went on to become global genre-defiers: Mick moving to the US to work with Irish American all-stars Solas, and Kathryn collaborating with diverse artists such as Jacob Collier, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Penguin Café Orchestra, and The Chieftains. In this tour Kathryn and Mick share some of their earliest musical influences alongside newly composed tunes and songs.
Kathryn has been awarded the OBE, and also the Queen’s Medal for Music for her outstanding contribution to British music; the first non-classical recipient of this award. She has twice won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Musician of the Year. She is also a regular presenter for BBC Radio 3’s ‘Music Planet’.
Mick McAuley is an Irish musician, composer and songwriter who has recorded and toured internationally for many years. While his music is rooted firmly in the Irish tradition, he has been part of a movement which continues to push the musical boundaries of that tradition to bring Irish music to a wider and more diverse audience around the world.
“No one has evoked the landscape and traditions of Northumbria more affectingly than Kathryn Tickell; a champion of the Northumbrian pipes, she is steeped in the songs and mythology of the north-east.” The Observer.
