Across the UK, a thriving network of independent Early Music Fora brings together singers, instrumentalists, and enthusiasts to explore and enjoy music from the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods.
Across the UK, a thriving network of independent Early Music Fora brings together singers, instrumentalists, and enthusiasts to explore and enjoy music from the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods.
These regional Fora were born out of a growing movement in the late 1970s to make early music more accessible beyond London. Following a landmark conference in 1977 titled The Future of Early Music in Britain, the first Forum was founded in the North West. Since then, the network has expanded significantly, now covering most parts of the UK with support from the National Early Music Association (NEMA).
Each Forum operates independently, running its own programme of practical workshops and events throughout the year. These are open to anyone interested in early music – you don’t have to live in the region to take part. Joining a Forum is a great way to stay connected with early music activity near you, and members usually benefit from discounted workshop fees. Many participants belong to more than one Forum.
The Early Music Fora work alongside the National Early Music Association, which acts as a central hub for early music in the UK. NEMA publishes research and news through its journals and organises academic conferences and events that bring together musicians, scholars, and audiences.
