A-LEVEL COMPOSITION WORKSHOP WITH STEF CONNER
Saturday 29 November 10.00-12.00
The National Centre for Early Music invites A-level students to participate in a free creative composition workshop as part of the annual Young Composers Award.
Join composer Stef Conner to explore the sounds and practices of early instruments and collaborate on a group composition. You’ll also hear about pathways into the music industry from Stef, early music performer Jamie Savan, and Award alumni Jacob Jordan. Plus a chance to sign up for the 2026 Young Composers Award with the potential for your piece to be featured on BBC Radio 3.
Stef Conner is a singer, composer and researcher associated with the University of York. As a creator-performer, she has carved a niche for herself in the misty borderlands between the contemporary classical, Early, and folk music worlds, combining the intense emotional sincerity of folksong with jazz-meets-classical technique, and an approach to melodic structure derived the study of ancient music and poetry.
Jamie Savan is a cornett player and director of The Gonzaga Band, an ensemble specialising in late Renaissance and early Baroque music. He also plays with His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts and the English Baroue Soloists, as well as holding the title of Professor of Performance-led Research at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Jacob Jordan is currently studying clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music. Since winning the NCEM Young Composer’s Award in 2023, Jacob has enjoyed several premieres, including performing their compositions Waves at the Sheffield City Hall, and Circling back home as part of a multimedia concert they organised in London.
