Haydn – String Quartet in C Major Op. 33 No. 3 (‘The Bird’) Tchaikovsky – String Quartet No 1 in D Major Op. 11. Dvořák – String Quintet in E flat major, Op. 97
We have brought to the city six of the best string players in the country to perform a programme built around composers with a gift for melodic invention. In his Op. 33 quartets Haydn toys with convention, surprises and delights us. Op. 33 No. 3 Is known as ‘The Bird’ for good reasons!!
In 1871 Tchaikovsky devised a concert of his own works, played in Moscow and including his new String Quartet, No.1 in D major. It was an unqualified success, full of gorgeous tunes, a harbinger of what was to come particularly in his symphonies. In 1893 in America, Dvořák took his family on a summer vacation to the countryside in Iowa where free from his official duties he wrote two of his finest compositions, embodying an intense love of chamber music and his revolutionary commitment to folk melody which gives his music such a passionate emotional impact.
