The Shepherd Group Brass Band organisation is one of the largest Brass Band organisations in the country, made up of five ensembles with over 150 players. It offers brass-playing opportunities to anyone, from absolute beginners to Championship section players. Players who begin in Brass Roots often move up through the bands as they progress on their instruments.

By partnering with the NCEM through the ‘I Can Play with Brass Roots’ project, the Shepherd Group Brass Band organisation demonstrates a commitment to providing accessible and inclusive opportunities for D/deaf and hearing players alike. The organisation will continue to undertake regular D/deaf awareness training.

Amazing experience, educational and highly recommended!

I Can Play! is run by the National Centre for Early Music, in partnership with Music and the Deaf, Lollipop, the University of York, York Arts Education and City of York Council's Deaf and Hearing Support Service, and generously supported by Harrogate Deaf Society, Mayfield Valley Arts Trust and Ovingdean Hall Foundation.  Sessions take place at York Music Centre at Millthorpe School, thanks to support from York Arts Education.

It is always a lovely experience for our daughter!! She loves the group and it has helped her build her confidence, spending time with friends. She has also learned a lot about music and she enjoys trying new musical instruments.

The organisers are great musicians, very caring and the kids have lots of fun.

Activity leaders are using both voice and BSL – perfect role models especially for CODA’s and non-BSL deaf children
