Among Byrd’s wide-ranging works for keyboard is not only music rooted in English styles and melody, but also pieces influenced by the latest popular tunes and musical developments from faraway Italy. In this recital Byrd’s music is set alongside toccatas and variations by his brilliant Italian counterpart Girolamo Frescobaldi, as well as further Anglo-Italian conjunctions by an Englishman composing in exile in Antwerp, Peter Philips.
