Talking signs relay information in an audible, verbal format and provide the same information to visually-impaired people that printed signs provide to the sighted community. A special badge is needed to activate the talking sign. If you are wearing this badge, and come within five to seven meters of a talking sign, the sign automatically begins speaking the information associated with that sign. The signs give orientation advice about the location rather than route guidance and help visually-impaired people have a more independent journey around York. The signs speak four different languages - English, Urdu, Bengali and Gujerati and there is a separate trigger card for each language.York residents can get these badges on permanent loan from YBPSS. Visitors to York who are registered visually impaired, can borrow badges short-term from YBPSS.
