North Yorkshire Early Years Conference - 28 February 2012

Cathryn Dew with her son Isaac
Music4U worked with the NYMAZ (North Yorkshire Music Action Zone) on 'Enjoying Music in Early Years' - an early years conference which took place on Tuesday 28 February 2012 at Pavilions in Harrogate, with a keynote presentation by Professor Cathy Nutbrown.

As part of this event Cathryn Dew, music consultant with the National Centre for Early Music, ran a session on Melody Monkey's Marvellous Music Box. During the workshop, she explored how the resource's songs, games and stories helped children learn musical concepts while also developing language, numeracy and social skills. She looked at ways to use instruments, puppets and other props for Early Years music making, discussing the ways in which babies and young children engage and interact with music, and examining how children develop musical skills.

Here were some comments about Cathy's session:

Really enjoyable session - shared lots of ideas and excellent demonstrations of the songs.

An excellent session which was practical and well run, with lots of nice simple songs and rhymes to use with early years children, I have implemented one today and the children loved it. I also throughout Isaac the ladies son being there was magical.

Excellent for covering the music curriculum, I purchased the resources for use in school.

Great analysis of musical experience and learning through simple memorable songs. Very engaging and useful.

Excellent session. Extremely informative and lots of fun. Great real life experience of bringing along her gorgeous little boy Isaac to bring a real life element to her presentation.
