Gill Baldwin Retires from the NCEM after 30 years in the Arts!

Gill Baldwin, the Conference Manager at the National Centre for Early Music (NCEM), retires next week after 30 years of service.

Known to many in the City for her cheerful and welcoming manner, Gill has always been willing to go that extra mile to ensure that conference organisers, delegates, brides and grooms, wedding guests, musicians and other visitors to the NCEM have a very special experience.

Prior to the NCEM opening in April 2000 and Gill taking on the conference manager role, she worked throughout the region with the team on a wide variety of different music projects, including the Sheffield Chamber Music Festival (now Music in the Round), Humberside Touring Agency, York Millennium Mystery Plays, York Early Music Festival, York Early Music Christmas Festival and Beverley Early Music Festival.

She said: I've had a wonderful 30 years. No two days are alike and I've met so many fantastic people from many different walks of life. I'm now looking forward to a busy retirement, catching up with old friends and spending time with my ever increasing number of grandchildren!'
Delma Tomlin, Director at the NCEM added: "Gill has been an integral part of this organisation over so many years. Supporting the York Early Music Festival, helping to create the annual Christmas festivities and since 2000 taking an increasingly vital role in the running of the NCEM.  She will be very much missed by the team and our many clients but most especially by me - she has been the rock upon which we have built our success."

Gill started her career at the age of 17 working for the Great Yorkshire Show, then with City of York Council Leisure Services Department and the Theatre Royal which is where she met Delma Tomlin. Gill recalls: "Delma asked me if I knew anyone who did shorthand as she was looking for someone to type a couple of letters; I offered my services and realised that there was more to do than type a few letters and the job grew from there!"

Gill's successor is Hannah Witcomb who joins the NCEM as the new Operations & Events Manager having previously worked at Barley Hall and the Jorvik Viking Centre. Hannah can be contacted on hannah.witcomb@ncem.co.uk or 01904 632220.
